Goodbye Patrick Swayze

Mon Sep 14, 2009, 10:23 PM
9/15/09

Actor Patrick Swayze, who along with his movie "Road House" was a source of alot of jokes in Episode 321 "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians", passed away at age 57 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He garnered a reputation as a hunky tough guy heartthrob in the 80s in such movies as "Red Dawn" and "Dirty Dancing" which he would later poke fun at in his Saturday Night Live Appearance and invert this image in his appearance in the 1995 film "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar". He will also be known for such memorable catchphrases as "Nobody puts baby in a corner!" and "You're my new Saturday night thing". Swayze also made more obscure movie appearances such as the corrupt faith healer in the 2001 movie "Donnie Darko". So all of us MSTies, let's pay tribute to Patrick Swayze and his fantastic movie career. Let's decorate a bar stool and gather 'round and sing! So long, Mr. Swayze. Perhaps you can be the bouncer for Heaven.

Your humble host knows the pancreas is not an organ to be reckoned with. I didn't have a condition as terrible and terminal as pancreatic cancer, but it was a year ago I had been hospitalized with idiopathic pancreatitis. I feel blessed that I've had good health since, but I've been a little more cautious about my pancreas. Maybe a Pancreas Awareness Day should be in the works? What do you think?

I've been mulling it over in my head and thought if there was some magical new version of MST3k, who would be in it? I know, it's hard imagining an MST3K without Joel or Mike and the rest of the gang. But who do you think would come closest enough to filling their shoes? Here are a few of my suggestions of people I'd nominate from the world of internet humor:

Josh Fruhlinger (The Comics Curmudgeon [link]): A fan influenced by the series, Josh already proved his snarking chops by poking fun at or finding hilarious possible hidden meanings to your dull, average newspaper comic strips for the past five years on his Comics Curmudgeon blog. Josh also has a connection to MST3K when he did the RiffTrax for "Spiderman 3" with Kevin and Bill. Josh also has a perfect Mike Nelsoneque everyman appearance but like Tom Servo is very well-read, witty and can pull out obscure trivia at hilarious moments.

Doug Walker (That Guy With The Glasses/ Nostalgia Critic [link]): The man who loves to smash our rose tinted glasses when it comes to 80s and 90s nostalgia. Doug hilariously mocks and deconstructs movies and TV shows from our youth and like Josh, he also has an MST3K connection when he did a RiffTrax of The Lion King with his brother and a friend recently. Doug can do a insane amount of vocal impersonations, go on amusing Daffy Duck-like rants against the insipid shows and movies he reviews, and is talented at singing, but his presence maybe be too much for some people. Additionally many of his TGWTG.com crew would make excellent stock characters in skits as they too are fans of the show. Could possibly make a good Mad or Crow.

Stuart Ashen (Dr. Ashen [link]): Dr. Ashen's foray into internet humor began when he started reviewing terrible, cheap video game system knockoffs on YouTube and to survive the whole ordeal playing those horrid pieces of plastic he would employ his lovable dry British wit. When he started making cameos on gaming program Screw Attack, he became excellent as being some kind of villain character. Dr. Ashen would make an excellent Mad or humorous stock villain appearance, but maybe not a good host or 'Bot as his accent or witty humour might not translate well to American audiences while riffing. While I'm not sure if he's a fan of MST3K, Dr. Ashen sure is a fan of bad B-movies and even has a whole site devoted to B-movie trailers called Trailer Club 70. Has a connection to Doug Walker as he posts stuff on TGWTG.com now.

Neil Cicierega (aka Lemon Demon [link]): The creator of Animutations, the Potter Puppet Pals and "The Ultimate Showdown" song is a huge fan of MST3k and even did a few MST3k-themed songs like Pod People tribute "Idiot Control Now" and I think but I may be wrong, a cover of the show's theme song. Would be my first choice in writing and composing the song skits to certain movies.

So that's all for tonight. More to come later.
Love,
:iconjhaumann:

Apparently, every episod has a story... And you never know where you'll stumble across those stories.

I was reading an article that was mostly just rehashing the history of comic books, but this one added a new tidbit. While American comics in the 60s were undergoing a SuperHero revival (the Silver Age), European comics were going through a superVILLAIN boom. Storis of thieves and murderers with names like Sadistik, Kriminal, Satanik,(the misplaced 'k' must be Europe's idea of calling a character "Something-Man") as well as..... Diabolik!

Yes, rather than being just a bit of hack-work, the final episode of MST3K was actually part of a comicbook franchise! Mike and the Bots were ripping on the late-60s European equivelant of the Spider-Man movie! Bizzare!
:iconedoholic:
XD I was watching an episode of MST3K as I found this! ...course I always watch MST3K when I work >.> I'm an addict, I averagely watch at least an episode a day, the very least one every other day. If I'm on a roll, I can watch like, an entire season in an afternoon X_X

Anyhow, I'm obviously going to join this club XD

Okay, time for a random, goofy little MSTie story... A week or so back, I was in a drug store and I glanced at one of thier super-bargain-DVD racks. And what did I see looking back at me? The ever-so-distinctive face of Arch Hall Jr. staring back me! It wasn't a DVD of "Eegah", but some other movie like "Guitar Strummers" or something... In any case, just seeing a MST refference in my daily life made me laugh!
:iconmst3k:
That might've been the other movie Arch Hall Jr. starred in the same year Eegah was made (1962). If you remember the song "Vickie" that he sings by the poolside in Eegah, he originally sang it in that movie since the female lead was named Vickie. Why he reused the song in Eegah (probably as filler), or why he didn't rename the song "Roxie" for the movie is beyond me. But there's the goofy little piece of trivia to go along with it!

I'm in! (Too bad my pictures with the cast back in June don't count as art. :D)
